Diameter Protocols

Diameter is an application-layer signaling protocol defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) functions in an IP network. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has adopted Diameter as a standard protocol for IMS AAA functions for a variety of SIP-based multimedia services. Diameter supports AAA functions for services such as push-to-talk, ad hoc conferencing, media rich communications, multimedia messaging, and Voice over IP services.

Functions

Signalware Diameter supports both the Diameter Base protocol and additional Diameter application interfaces defined by the 3GPP. The Signalware Diameter solution includes a local routing function, session and connection management, a parser for the basic commands and attribute value pairs (AVPs), and management interfaces.

Standards
Signalware Diameter supports the following core IETF and 3GPP standards:

  • Diameter Base Protocol (RFC 3588)
  • Diameter Command Codes for 3GPP (RFC 3589)
  • Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Transport Profile (RFC 3539)
  • IP Multimedia Subsystem Sh Interface; Signaling flows and message contents (Release 5 and 6) 3GPP TS 29.328
  • Sh interface based on Diameter protocol; Protocol details (Release 5 and 6) 3GPP TS 29.329
  • PN-4935.11 (TIA-837.11) Sh Interface for ANSI networks
  • Use of SCTP with IPSec (RFC 3554)
