BSSAP

The GSM BSSAP-LE (Base Station System Application Part, Location Services Extension) allows for the implementation of location based service servers and the interfaces to them. GSM BSSAP-LE supports the Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA) location method, the technology selected to support the stringent requirements of the US E-911 FCC directive. Location based servers are used to deploy services that enable users on machines to find other people, vehicles, resources, services or other machines. They also enable others to find users, as well as enabling users to identify their own location. With BSSAP-LE, it is possible to implement GSM network location elements such as a Serving Mobile Location Centers (SMLC).

 

BSSAP-LE has numerous Location Based (LBS) service opportunities. LBS is used to locate a handset in case of calls to emergency numbers such as 911. The ability to locate callers is becoming a government-mandated capability required by rescue or medical personnel in locating and rendering assistance. With location based capabilities, it is also possible to offer revenue generating services which interact with callers, helping them find points of interest based on the current geographical location. Coupled with NexGen data capabilities, enhanced voice interaction platforms, and open service architectures, location-based services will drive network demand and increase revenue generating potential.

 

The nature of emergency service requirements demands high availability. LBS value added services call for flexibility and openness. Signalware's® high availability attributes and open computing platforms combined with the BSSAP-LE enabler, is a perfect combination defining a platform for developing the SMLC network element. The combination brings robustness to the ability to utilize 3rd party products in offering interfaces to location information.

 

BSSAP-LE is defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as an extension to the signaling between the Mobile Switching Center (MSC)/Visiting Location Register (VLR) and the Base Station System (BSS). It is a global standard and is used throughout the world in GSM networks. It utilizes SS7 SCCP class 0 (connectionless) and class 2 (connection oriented) signaling.

 

BSSAP-LE can be used in the following network elements:

  • Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs)
  • Serving Mobile Location Center (SMLC)
  • Base Station Controller (BSC)

When used in conjunction with MAP, it enables deployment of network elements such as the Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC). Signalware BSSAP-LE is developed based on the following specifications:
